5 Ways to Beat The Winter Blues

1. Eat Smarter

Ultimately, both may increase feelings of anxiety and depression.
The more balanced options these next few months are complex carbs and whole grains. Complex carbs take longer to digest and don’t cause spikes in blood sugar (that’s what’s to blame to mood swings). The most delicious kinds include spinach, broccoli and yams.
2. Get Some Exercise
Going outside to shovel is a pain, right? Going outside to shovel so you can go to the gym? No way. Why would you go to the gym when Netflix has so many viewing options?
Physical exercise is definitely something to consider this winter, though – It’s a proven depression buster. Don’t use the gloomy weather as an excuse to be lazy. Even just walking fast for 35 minutes a day, five times a week can improve depression symptoms (and that was proven by a Harvard University study!).
3. Brighten Up Your Surroundings
If the term “light box” isn’t in your vocabulary, you might need to expand your horizons. Any type of artificial light is helpful when your body craves more daylight, and sitting near one for even just 30 minutes per day can be as effective as an antidepressant. Open your blinds and curtains! Trim those trees that are blocking the sun from coming into your room! Get as much natural light into your life as possible.
Even just using bright colors on your walls and styled into your interior decor can help!
4. Take a Vacation
The easiest solution to fighting the winter blues is an obvious one – take a vacation.
If you’ve got the means, research shows that the simple act of planning a vacation causes a significant increase in overall happiness.
