5 Tips on Eating Right This New Year

It’s that time of year again when you start thinking about lifestyle changes that will better yourself. For many of us, this includes the way we eat. At Isle of Capri® Boonville, we have your back with plenty of healthy options offered at our three onsite restaurants. Here are five tips to help you get started eating right this New Year.

1. Add More Vegetables and Fruits to Your Diet
Research has shown that eating a rainbow of veggies and fruits provides a variety of benefits, including protection against the effects of aging, heart disease, and even cancer. Make sure to have just one vegetable or fruit with each meal.

Our Farmer’s Pick Buffet® can help you stay on track by offering you the freshest fruits and vegetables from local farmers and regional growers. Or stop by Farraddays'® and add our Asiago and Roasted Tomato Polenta, Sauteed Broccolini, or Grilled Asparagus or Squash to your meal and know that you're getting the freshest and healthiest ingredients.

2. Eat Less Sugar and More Naturally Sweet Food
Choose naturally sweet foods instead of indulging in sugar-packed processed foods when your sweet tooth kicks in. This can help curb those sugar cravings. Give your taste buds time to adjust by reducing the sugar in your diet a little at a time to slowly wean yourself off the craving. Stay away from sugary drinks. Try drinking sparkling water with a splash of fruit juice instead. Also try to choose naturally sweet vegetables like sweet potatoes, corn and beets.

3. Eat More Fish
It's recommended that you eat two servings of fish every week (that’s about 1 cup). Fish is an excellent source of protein, low in saturated fat and a source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids help keep your heart healthy. Try Farraddays' Grilled Salmon next time you visit Isle of Capri Boonville. This delicious, heart-healthy fish is grilled with a sweet and spicy pineapple glaze and served with citrus rice and sauteed broccolini.

4. Eat More Fiber
When you eat foods high in dietary fiber, it not only helps you lose weight, but it also lowers your risk for diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. It also helps you stay regular. Depending on your gender and age, for optimal health it is recommended that you eat at least 21 to 38 grams of fiber per day. Starting your day with whole grain cereal or whole-wheat toast is an easy way to add more fiber to your diet.

5. Keep Solid Fats at an Absolute Minimum
Eat fewer foods that contain solid fats. Among the culprits in this category are desserts made with butter or shortening such as cookies and cakes, ice cream, fatty processed meats such as bacon and sausages, and pizza.

Eating should be enjoyable. When you enjoy the process, you are more likely to stick with your goals and healthy food choices for the rest of the year, so stop by Farmer's Pick Buffet, Farraday's, or grab a quick snack at Tradewinds® and enjoy a true farm-to-table dining experience. With ingredients that come right from our own backyard, you know your eating healthy.

Remember, at Isle of Capri Boonville, not only will you play happy, you will eat happy too! From our house-smoked ribs and brisket to the freshest salad bar around, we offer something for everyone. Here's to eating healthy!
